Running to stand still

The hilarious thing is... not only have I not kept this blog up to date, but I'm not even posting from the laptop as I type this. I would use the fact that I've been very busy as mitigation but despite said business I've achieved nothing whatsoever. Mercifully though, Nottingham Forest have won away for the first time since the wheel was invented. Which begs the question - how did they get to that previous away win without wheels, given that it was at Gillingham?

Our druids have confirmed that the handfasting can go ahead as planned again this Beltaine. Weeks of invite-hell beckon... punctuated with the odd trip to Wales, which shall be all the sweeter now that I have unearthed a very old friend who lives en-route instead of in Streatham. Which has to be an improvement.

Beginning

It was heart-in-mouth stuff really. Having spent my last £50 of games buying money on an old Thinkpad of dubious athletic prowess and much internet auction unpleasantness, I set about tarting the little hussy up somewhat. Primarily, I felt that given our closer proximity to 2010 than the millennium it wouldn't do for her to have anything less than 802.11g wifi, so in goes a notebook network card which Windows 98 has very little understanding of at all. It sort of knows what it is for and how to work it but not in any practical way at all. Bunging in a further 128mb of Crucial's finest ram, I set about putting XP on instead, only to bring the whole system crashing down around me on Saturday afternoon just as Forest once more capitulated at home to decidedly common opposition.

Two days later, then... I finally get XP installed and after Firefox and Chatzilla this is my first port of call. The plan behind this blog (I have two others) is to get me into the habit of writing on this particular machine because that would be a very useful habit to be in. Now I have my laptop set up how I need it. I am now entering that special computer world where your machine will run Doom quite satisfactorially but not a recent build of a Spectrum emulator. This is where computing gets interesting. Perhaps the three main advantages now are these:

  1. I can listen to streaming Forest commentary in the bath
  2. I can use a computer and stil be in the same room as my wife
  3. I can view pornography at work free from fear of exposure.

We shall see how it goes. The main thing is to be as productive as possible.
